DVD Review: ‘Todd and the Book of Pure Evil – The Complete First Season’

The Canadian import Todd and the Book of Pure Evil feels like absolutely nothing so a lot as a (sort of) grown up, foul-mouthed version of the old Goosebumps tv series. Developed by Craig David Wallace, Charles Picco, and Anthony Leo and based mostly on a 2003 short, the 13 episodes of the very first season (its second is at the moment airing in the U.S. on FearNet) tell the story of the titular Todd, a teen metal head with aspirations of rock godhood who stumbles upon the titular book, which helps make the bearer’s wishes come genuine, normally with ironic consequences.

This horror-comedy sees Todd (Alex House) joined by his gang of loveable loser buddies in the ongoing, typically apart from-the-point search for the book: there’s his one particular-armed finest friend Curtis (Bill Turnbull), a fellow stoner and dispenser of typically terrible guidance, Jenny (Maggie Castle), Todd’s crush, whose father’s disappearance is by some means tied to the book, and bookish Hannah (Melanie Leishman) who serves as the resident brain for the group although carrying a torch for Todd. The group is joined by the show’s secret weapon, advice counselor Atticus Murphy (Chris Leavins), who is secretly aligned with a Satanic cult seeking to get their hands on the book. Oh, and Jason Mewes plays a wisdom dispensing janitor with a point for thick girls.

With the exception of Leavins, most of the young cast invest most of the very first season obtaining the hang of their characters beyond the broad strokes of the varieties they are assigned to. The Goosebumps comparison from the leading of this critique feels all the much more salient when you watch these nevertheless up-and-coming actors play their roles as earnestly and with as considerably conviction as they can muster, and even if Todd and organization never rather achieve the degree of chemistry of say the Buffy cast, that “let us place on a show” feeling by some means tends to make it all gel. The demonstrate also positive aspects from the (comparatively) exotic take on rock and roll/metal culture that seems calcified someplace in the early 80’s. To go by Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, metal never ever genuinely received behind the long hair and denim jacket phase, creating the 2010 series feel like some kind of curious, funny throwback.

The very same could be said for the gory effects work backing most of the show’s jokes. This is a series that offers us mutant, sentient fat (“Monster Fat”) a wave of idiocy that strikes the complete school (“Invasion of the Stupid Snatchers”) a giant, and prehensile penis (“Cockfight,” since of program). Again, it’s the simplicity and directness of the humor that by some means helps make it function. This is not a particularly thematically-wealthy display, but the gags are well-realized, and the scripts never ever go out of their way to point out the ridiculousness of what ends up on screen.

But once again, the genuine treasure of the demonstrate is Chris Leavins, whose special line delivery is component of what can make his hapless counselor/Satanist character function. He hits the emphasis in his lines in consistently unusual spots, and Leavins plays him as the lifelong, awkward nerd who’s merely hunting for some spot to belong, whether it be as a Satanist lackey or often pal to a group of teens attempting to thwart mentioned cult. Equipped with his collection of sweater vests and one particular of the worst stories of virginity lost on tv, Leavin’ Murphy character is one of a lot more endlessly entertaining comic creations in recent memory.

Yet again, it’s all of the identical piece: the show is a collection of elements that operate, glued with each other by simple charm and with conditions that get ridiculous without going (as well) goofy.
