This weekend, the Hulk smashes his was onto Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Guy… And not only that, but the inventive present is going for a identified footage angle, shot by way of the lens of enterprising reporter Mary Jane Watson’s cell telephone. To discover out a lot more, like who the secret villain of the present is, how this connects to the upcoming Hulk: Agents of SMASH, and much more, read on!

MTV Geek: To kick issues off, I hear you have an fascinating visual gadget you’re making use of for this episode… How’d you finish up taking the located footage angle, and how’s it going to function for animation?

Jeph Loeb: It was Joe Quesada who very first came up with the concept of making an attempt to do it this way.  One of the a lot of things we’re going for with this show — and all the displays at Marvel Animation Studios — is to break as numerous guidelines as we can with our storytelling.  That’s part of Marvel’s DNA and we want it to be present in our animation.

But none of that is achievable without having our amazing production group headed up by Eric Radomski, and in this scenario, Alex Soto, the director, who are continually hunting for approaches to make the present as visual impactful as possible.

Then, the true challenge was to make it function on a script level and that’s where Man OF ACTION soared.  The breakdown of the POV, the shifting viewpoints, and ultimately the storyline begins with the script and this was one of our strongest to date.

Steve Seagle/Guy of Action: We have been speaking about this cool Hulk story and Joe Q had the sweet concept to give it a Cloverfield sort of sensibility – seeing scary pictures through a shaky hand-held camera. Only our videographer is none other than Mary Jane Watson! Even though it is relatively effortless to shoot reside action with a hand-held digital camera – the blunders give it the type – it is the opposite in animation. Our group had to make some thing slick look haphazard – which is truly quite tough to pull off. But they did.

Geek: Provided how often Ultimate Spidey skewers pop culture, are we going to see him poking exciting at any other renowned discovered footage movies (hint, Blair Witch, hint)?

SS: Ha! No, that’s a excellent thought, but this episode does a thing very diverse with the format of our demonstrate – which is why I loved working on this episode with our co-author, Dani Wolff. The whole 22 minutes is from the point of see of MJ’s camera – so there is truly no way to do any crazy cutaways. We had to discover the humor in other approaches – like Hulk “sneaking” up on Spidey – or fogging up the lens of the digital camera with his nose steam!

JL: We didn’t set out to do that — but you can definitely read into what ever you like.  (laughs) Keep in mind, we started out this about a year and half ago, just before CHRONICLE or Venture X.  It was much more of response the way storytelling has evolved by means of the internet and via YOU TUBE. That grew to become our beginning point.  But doing that in animation?  We’re breaking by means of to the subsequent degree.

Geek: What’s your consider on the Hulk right here? Is he “Rar, SMASH!” or are we going to see one thing else?

JL: What’s most essential is that we’re much more and much more going to be seeing the HULK as a HERO.  With the aid of the AVENGERS movie (opening this weekend in situation you have been residing in a cave), the Hulk is poised to be the breakout hero of the summer season.  We want our audience and fans to know that you can locate a brand NEW HULK story this weekend on ULTIMATE SPIDER-Guy.

SS: Our Hulk is funny and scary. Which is type of the formula for Hulk in the Avengers movie, however we have a somewhat different method for that mixture in USM. I will say that the minute we completed this episode, all of us Man OF ACTION guys and everybody else on the show instantly wanted to do an additional Hulk story.

Geek: Clearly, Hulk steals in the demonstrate in the Avengers film… You’ve kind of touched on this currently, but have been you inspired by the Ruffalized version of the character at all? Are we going see touches of that performance right here on Television?

JL: (laughs)  We hadn’t seen any of the film when this was coming collectively — which is astonishing btw! — but certainly a single of the rewards of getting Marvel make its own animation is getting access to the people at the Marvel Studio and people like Kevin Feige and Joe Quesada who are ready to give us the inside scoop on what’s coming up in the following handful of years.  So as we start to tell our stories, we have this sort of sync where the weekend of the most significant Marvel movie but can coincide with the HULK guest starring on the biggest Marvel animated series yet.

SS: Yeah, right? How compelling-slash-very good is Mark Ruffalo in that movie? He’s outstanding. He so completely inhabited Bruce Banner that when I lastly saw the Hulk on screen I believed that was Mark as well. He was excellent. And yes, touches, but our consider is slightly distinct – however no less exciting.

Geek: What about the relationship amongst Hulk and Spidey?

JL: Hulk likes Bug Guy.  That quite a lot sums it up.  But, this is the first time they meet (in our MA planet) and so it is a mastering curve for the two of them….  One that we comply with by means of the program of the season (yes, the Hulk will be back — you heard it here very first!).

SS: So very good. You get the sense that Spidey knows who Hulk is from just before USM. And Hulk – seeing that Spidey is equally capable of a good smash now and then – a lot to JJJ’s dismay – is rapidly to like the wall-crawler. But there are also some genuinely strong character beats in between them in this episode too. By the end they are buddies in the truest sense of the word.

Geek: And where’s the rest of the group on this? Are we just going to see Spidey consider on the Hulk all by his lonesome?

JL: You’ll have to watch to discover out.  But the show is constructed so that often Spidey has stand alone stories, and at times NOVA, IRON FIST, Energy Guy and WHITE TIGER are along for the adventure. ?

SS: We do see some other gamers in the USM universe – Fury is on hand, for example – but for the most element this one is about Spidey, MJ and the massive green man. And I wouldn’t have it any other way! Oh, yeah, and there is a shock negative guy we haven’t talked about nevertheless! Begins with a “Z”.

Geek: Each and every episode is as significantly about a lesson for Spidey as it is about the entertaining and humor… What variety of lesson are we going to see him learning here, other than, “Don’t get smashed?”

SS: Well, come on. “Don’t get smashed” is a waaaay much more important lesson then “friends come in all shapes, sizes, and colors” is not it?  “Don’t get smashed” could have saved the careers of several celebrities! Heed my words… Don’t… Get… Smashed.

JL: It’s about knowing every other.  One of the compelling items about Spidey is that he’s not noticed as a hero by every person (ahem, JJJ!), and that view is undoubtedly one thing that Hulk as dealt with for many years.  Sometimes your best friendships can happen in the most intriguing approaches.

Geek: I really don’t know how a lot you can speak to this, but with HULK: Agents of S.M.A.S.H. coming, are we going to see any set up right here? Or is that as well far off to make the connection right now?

JL: Keep tuned.  Much like the Marvel films have a cohesive universe, we want all factors on television to have a really feel that is uniquely MARVEL.  “Straight from the tap” as Mr. Quesada likes to say.

SS: This script was written when that display was just a tiny green glint in Jeph Loeb’s eye! But Marvel has constantly been great about building up a cohesive universe. So, yeah, issues will knit… at some point.

Geek: I’ve chatted with you guys before the display launched, but now that it’s been on for a while, what do you think the reaction has been like? What had been you stunned worked, and what are you aiming to do in a different way going forward?

JL: It is been a terrific response and we’re thrilled with what’s coming.  Like with anything, it gets greater as we get much better.  We’ve only been on five occasions — folks are finding the humor, the breaking of the fourth wall mixed with the kick butt action.  Drake Bell’s efficiency as Peter Parker/Spider-Man is amazing.?

SS: The excellent thing about the display for us is that we function so far ahead that there is no way to change anything at all now. We had to be sure about what we had been undertaking lengthy just before any individual gave any variety of feedback. We’re shocked at how effectively the jokes play, but they are not out of the realm of the previous Peter Parkers, so that is not a massive shock. The ratings have gone up every single week given that the demonstrate premiered with good ratings to commence. So I believe kids are digging what we’re performing and finding the present. And it does hold acquiring stronger on both the story and the animation sides as it goes.

Geek: What’s subsequent for Ultimate Spider-Guy?

JL: Much more large action. Far more adventure.  More drama with humor.  All the things that make Spidey as amazing, magnificent, astonishing and ULTIMATE as he can be.  Lots of big guest stars — seem for WOLVERINE and THOR coming up very quickly as properly.  And some big villains also — the display rocks!

SS: We have some ridiculous episodes in the pipeline. Marvel never lets us spill the beans in advance, but let me just say that things I assumed would be off the table from moment one occurs in some of the really next episodes! Men and women are going to enjoy the 1st Brian Bendis-scripted episode! And when Spidey turns into [REDACTED] men and women are not going to think it.

The new episode of Ultimate Spider-Guy premieres Sunday, May 6th at 11am on Disney XD!
